Birding Lotería

Submissions can be made at any time. The list of species is updated as photos are submitted to reflect what we still need.

Lotería is a traditional Mexican game of chance similar to bingo. Each player holds a tabla, which is a board with a 4 × 4 grid of pictures randomly chosen from the 54 pictures in the deck of cards. To start the game, the cantor (caller) shuffles the deck. One by one, the cantor picks a card from the deck and announces it to the players by its name. Each player locates the matching picture on their board and marks it off with a chip or other kind of marker.

Birding Lotería turns this into a game of skill by giving the cantor a deck of cards with no pictures — just species names! The cantor will call out the names and participants must correctly identify the birds on their tablas.

Our pictures are from our festival participants! To submit a picture to be featured on a card for the Birding Lotería, please complete the form below.
