Snapshot:
This trip will take you up into the northwestern part of Val Verde County where the Devils River crosses Texas Highway 163. Baker’s Crossing is a clear, blue ribbon of the Devils River flanked by large, beautiful oaks. While the riparian area isn’t big, this location is an oasis in the Chihuahuan Desert ecoregion that is frequently visited by a large number of species and definitely a birding hot spot! Birders on this trip are likely to see a variety of migrant species.

East meets west at this Devils River hotspot. Red-eyed and yellow-throated vireos co-mingle with tropical parulas and zone-tailed hawks. The wide bend of the river here is also ideal for scoping out kingfishers and herons. We will be taking our time in this small area and really getting to know the birds here. Working a small area like this can often be just as rewarding as covering a lot of ground in as much time!
