Is this a program for beginners?

Our program offers something for all skill levels of birders! All of our guides and birding buddies can help beginner birders and challenge advanced birders. Our program provides access to private lands with photography opportunities and unique educational opportunities, so all participants can also learn from researchers and conservationists.

What are the target birds?

There are so many species to see during this program! Our 2018 tour found 133 species. Some of the highlights in this area include:

What kind of accommodations will there be?

Participants are responsible for their own lodging arrangements. Del Rio has a variety of lodging options.

What is the climate where I will be birding?

Spring in southwest Texas can be lovely! Daytime highs are usually in the high 80s, with nighttime lows in the low 60s. However, unexpected weather can occur at any time, including temperatures far above or below the averages. Check the forecast before your trip and pack accordingly. Spring is also when this region typically gets some rain, so we recommend a good rain coat and any protective gear needed for your birding and photography equipment.

What type of clothing should I pack?

We recommend that you check the weather as you pack for your trip and be prepared for the unexpected! Spring in Texas can be lovely but is also unpredictable. Recommended clothing to pack includes a light jacket, a rain jacket, long pants, shorts, long-sleeved shirts, and short-sleeved shirts. Sturdy walking/hiking shoes are a must. In the case of inclement weather during the program, we may modify our schedule. No refunds will given due to weather.

Do I need to bring any equipment?

Please bring any equipment that you would like to use for birding, such as binoculars, spotting scopes, cameras, and field guides. Note that space will be limited in the vans so large tripods may not fit. The photography trips however will have space for equipment.

Will there be internet and phone service?

Wi-fi internet may be available at your hotel. Cell phone service is limited throughout the areas we will travel. Other than when we are in Del Rio, please do not expect reliable cell phone service.

Will I need insect protection?

Mosquitos, horse flies, gnats, chiggers, and other biting insects live in this region. While they will not be out in full force at this time of year, biting insects may be still be encountered during hikes and walks. Please bring insect repellant.

Liability

Participants will be required to sign waivers in advance. Participants who do not sign will not be able to join in the program activities.
